Tethering Help

Hey guys just wondering if some of you mobile guru's would be willing to help a first time smartphone buyer out.

I purchased the Droid Eris for Verizon yesterday and have been watching videos on making the phone turn into a mobile wireless router to have internet on the laptops.

What I'm wondering first off, how exactly is this done?

And two, if I only browse the net at the house and do homework through blackboard and download 2-4mb powerpoint/excel files, can I turn off my cable internet and just use the tethered internet? I'm just wondering how fast it would be for web browsing.

If anyone can offer some help it would be greatly appreciated!
